Any CD-R media will play in any modern cd audio player. Most audio cd players today (car, home units, portables) still do not seem to support RW media but I believe it's catching on slowly. RW and a fast burner would be nice for quick compilations.
As for CD-R vs. Cd-RW drives, I don't think there are many straight R drives available these days and even if there were, I'd still get a RW drive. Nice for data...
About those how stereo CD-R/RW components vs. PC... The stereo components require a special disc format. The for-audio disc can be played anywhere so that's not a problem. The main issue there is that since the stereo component cannot use standard CD-R for recording, you need to buy the for-audio discs and they cost more than computer CD-R's (to support the music industry). Anybody with the most basic computer skills can burn a audio disc on a computer so if you've got a computer, definitely go that way.
Finally, about quality... Burn speeds and quality for most drives these days are quite high. Some are still better than others but not by all that much. I know some people that swear by Plextors or HP's but I've done fine with all the modern drives. Back in 96, there were large differences but not so much today. Personally, I'd probably not buy the slowest drive out there but somewhere slightly below average price. Of course, I'm kinda cheap on my computer parts. Developing software doesn't require anywhere near the hardware that playing games does.
Oh yeah, one last thing. You can burn audio at high speed (8x+) but I've found quality over 4x to be problematic (skipping). This seems to be true of most drives (it's not my slow PC at home - we use them on 700mhz+ machines at work). So, if your focus is mostly audio (mine is), the save yourself some money and go cheaper. 8x would probably be good enough, at least in my humble opinion.
