Alright, everyone here comes from many different backgrounds/careers/interests, except for all being saabnuts - it's really cool. But I gotta ask: Why are new car sales people the way they are (at work) at the local dealer?!?!

It's your typical US Saab dealer (w/ MB, VW, Porsche, etc). Gotta walk through the sales cubicles, sales people standing around, and parked purdy Porches to get to the Saab Parts Dept (yeah, I'm there a lot).

Invariably, I walk through a knot of sales people who continue some innane conversation about how "cool" some new thing is or how "crappy" some old thing was (like last year's now-cliche'd model). They typically glance at me, look away, and pull this high brow I'm-too-important-to-acknowledge-you trick. "You, who pull up in the "old" but shined up red 900S, are beneath me and there's nothing I would bother to do for you." I smile, nod, and/or say "hi" anyway. They ignore/say nothing. What is it about being a "high-end" car salesman that makes you so smug? Is it possible to be that much "better" than everyone else by selling pretty cars?

Another stereotype-laden picture: It's not like I show up in my Saturday worst looking for trouble. I typically go after class/clinic, business casual or suit, pleasant and happy to be there; in other words, not visually presenting myself (I think?) as one of their dreaded, no-profit "Here comes another punk wanting to drive our Porsches again" (though I would in a heartbeat). So, short of carrying in a silver briefcase with a dollar sign in gold lief on it, dying my hair gray and copping a Harvard accent - what does it take to get some common courtesy/customer service out of these people?! Walk in and declare: "I'm gonna spend 80 G's today!"? Think I'm going to just continue saying hi and smiling - maybe they'll start to feel like the idiot I do for being polite. I sold windows, doors, etc on the floor as a college student and I tell ya, this is no way to sell building materials, anyway! :o) Heck, it's not how you treat customers period. P.S. These are the VW and Porsche people; the Saab people are across the room.
