I'll 4th (Bose No, B&O maybe)

I think we're all agreed, Bose is overpriced and their satellite system has weak midrange (meanwhile, some of their other speakers only have midrange).
As for B&O, I used to think that it was stereo equipment for those with "more dollars than sense". Then I bought a BeoSound 1 (a "boom box", probably a competitive response to Bose's Waveguide radio) for my office and I'm not so sure anymore. I listened to every "compact" system I could find (JVC, Denon, Sony, Nakamichi, Bose, etc.) and this one just kept blowing the others away. To me, this unit sounds as good (sometimes better) as my mid-level, "mass market" main stereo (Onkyo + Boston Acoutics) Then again, it cost almost as much, too. Since it's small, it's never going to give thundering bass, but most of the music I listen to when I work doesn't have thundering bass. It also has some quirks (not unlike the cars we love): no AM radio and no bass/treble controls, but I haven't missed them. It is built rock-solid (from aluminum and plastic, and the remote control is made from zinc, not just plastic), and I can control the volume with my B&O phone.
Based on this experience, I will seriously consider B&O when I find an excuse to upgrade the Onkyo stuff. As was mentioned in other posts, you can definitely find equipment that sounds better for the price or maybe equipment that sounds just as good for less (I think I've damaged my ears too much with rock concerts that the ultra high end stuff is a waste for me)... but sometimes you've got to look at the whole package (not unlike Saab)... design, performance, style, etc.
