Always attempt to settle disputes in writing. Although the phone might be more convenient it typically does not provide you the same rights as does written notification.
Also - - is their a posibility that there was a slow payment by even one day. Typically the item would not be marked as bad debt. It would show a specific month, the amount of delay and possibly the dollar amount. Please note that even a payment that is late by one day is typically marked slow 30.
In the interim contact your Bank and see if they still have the canceled checked on microfiche etc. This will assist you if you need to show the date Discover processed the payment.
You can also request to have the slow pay marked disputed.
I would not cancel or close the account till this is resolved.
Also many banks etc utilize a credit score to determine your overall credit worthiness. Most scores are developed by Fair Issacs or the like. You can also request a copy of your score through the Experian web site. Many people become very upset when they see their score - - - they take many different data points into consideration. This is becoming a much more common way for your 'credit worthiness' to be appraised by banks, lending organizations and credit card companies.
As any FYI - - American Express might be a good option. They report in a fairer way - - and since the core card is really a charge card not a credit card it might be more suitable. Also if you travel internationally the American Express Platinum card is great because you can have someone travel with you free if you book either business class or first. This easily makes up for the annual $300 fee.
Best of luck,
Dave
