Battery Buildup Question

The positive connection on my battery (92 900TC) tends to form a blue, sponge like, substance. I clean it periodically and use a little grease on the connection. I bought the car recently and it is in excellent shape. The battery has enough H2O in it. However when I pulled the battery out I noticed a lot of white powdery substance in the battery tray. Could a previous battery have exploded? The engine compartment is clean except for the heat shield for the battery. It is quite rusted and seems very close to the exhaust to be of much use. Any suggestions?
