Another option for cleaning up the corrosion is Windex. spray it on the terminals and the battery box and it will remove the white deposit. Clean up the battery tray, dry it thoroughly prime it and paint it.

It is a good idea to wash the battery with bicarbonate or windex at each oil change. This will limit corrosion build up and also eliminate surface discharge. If you want to see surface discharge in action take a volt meter, attach the positive probe to the positive post and touch the negative probe to various spots across the top of the battery. you may see up to 5-6 volts on various spots on the battery if it's really dirty.

The battery foam products in the auto parts stores are not much different than windex foaming window cleaner.
