While the Viggen has more personality, the Passat was SUCH a fundamentally sound car. Great little engine, logical layout of everything, nice handling (although a little too plush for my tastes), and great feeling of quality. In comparing the Passat to its price competitors, it just outshone them all (including the base 9-3, which was too pricey for me at the time).
You can hate what VW is doing now (the D1? puh-leez), but the Passat, Golf and Jetta are marvels of quality engineering.
