Hi,
I'm not the best one to answer this. Hopefully, others will
add to my explanation or correct me if I'm wrong.
Mounting an engine transversely has the benefit of saving a
lot of space. If you see a big-old inline-6 in a RWD vehicle,
it sits in the middle of the engine compartment fore-aft, and
you'll see a lot of empty space all around.
On a Saab, the engine is on one side (passenger side on my 9-5),
and does not take up much space whatsoever. You can thank small
engine size and transverse mounting on Saab for the extra engine
space and extra trunk space.
I do not believe there is a *performance* reason for mounting
transversely.
thanks
Jae
