I grew up in the Rockies and saw the same thing every day it snowed (and we are talking from 1 in. to 3 ft. of snow) - some tweak in a Ford Exploder/Chevy Suburbinator off the road and in the ditch. I grew up as a passenger in Saabs and from the age of 15 was driving them. Yeah, I couldn't go hardcore off roading, but on snowy roads, I never had a problem. The two Saabs I drove (my parent's '86 900 and my 1978 99) were always steadfast. I even used to drive the 99 up packed snow roads (like catwalks at the ski area I lived in). Hell, even the cops drove, and still drive, Saabs there (though they now have some Tahoes or some otehr SUV, too).
I don't buy the excuse that one "needs" an SUV for the snow. If you have 4 kids, a dog and need to go on Jeep trails, sure, but not for the snow alone. An Aero wagon will do nicely otherwise ;^).
