Scheiße - they're using SALT in Washington! This is BAD news:
From http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/news/nov02/saltpilot.htm:
"For approximately 15 years, WSDOT has relied primarily on alternative chemical de-icers to minimize snow and ice on state highways. However, WSDOT believes that now is the time conduct the pilot project on salt for several reasons:
1. For the last 20 years, automobile and truck manufacturing industries have improved corrosion resistance by using more non-steel materials and improving vehicle paint finishing processes.
2. During that same 20 years, WSDOT has incorporated corrosion-resistant, epoxy-coated rebar into bridge deck construction projects.
3. WSDOT has monitored other states that use rock salt and report equal service (i.e. the salt maintains an equally bare driving surface) to what WSDOT has experienced with alternative chemical de-icers.
4. As an added benefit, rock salt is half the price of chemical de-icers and salt brine can be five to ten times less expensive than alternative liquid de-icers."
The article goes on to say:
"WSDOT reminds motorists to wash their cars thoroughly after traveling through mountain passes or other areas where snow and ice have been present, regardless of whether they have driven through a pilot area. All materials, whether salt or other alternative de-icing chemicals, are soluble in water, so the entire vehicle should be rinsed and then cleaned."

I thought I left the rust rot behind when I left the east coast. Guess my car will be "acting up again" when it's time to choose a driver when heading for the hills this winter.
PS If WA is doing it, OR may be, too. Check out this PNW DOT consortium website: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/partners/pns/default.htm
