The C900 WAS a failure

As far as I'm concerned the C900 WAS the beginning of the problems for Saab. Basically, it's not a very economical car to build (it cost MORE than the 9000 to manufacture but sold for less), it's needlessly complex, not very reliable, and the transmissions (both automatic and manual) were the weak points.
Yeah, Saab had the attention of the "yuppies" for a brief time in the 80's, but that faded fast as soon as the repair bills rolled in... And it took the Japanese with the newly introduced Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura brands to really stick it to Saab and all the entrenched "euro-luxury" brands. Heck, Lexus even got Mercedes to wake up and improve THEIR cars!!
Competition is a wonderful thing... It improves the product for everyone and lowers prices. Saab didn't have the right product to be competitive until the 9-5 came out in 1997. By then it was too late.
In hindsight, Saab should've had the guts to develop a C900 replacement in the mid 80's that was the best car on the road. Instead they kept the same old platform for waaaay too long and the competition ate their lunch. In business school they tell you...
"Either make your own products obsolete or your competitors will do it for you!"
