A bunch of negative nancies?? Give us a break!!
Yes, I regret the fact that we live in a world where a small independent car company can't survive. That doesn't mean that I am blind to the fact that it's true.
However, I take serious issue with your statement that "SAAB was a failure as a car company." SAAB had nearly forty good, successful years as a car company before the "global market" changed the rules of the game. The classic 900 was a smash success in the 1980's, before GM ever took over. It was the car all the yuppies and aspriring yuppies had to have back then. Why? Because it was different from all the other Euro-sedans. When the classic 900 convertible came out in 1986, they couldn't make enough of them for the American market. I don't call that being a failure as a car company. At the height of the classic 900's popularity, SAAB sold more cars in the U.S. than they do now - that's being a failure?? Their sales now, under GM "leadership," are lower than they were when they were independent.
I don't deny that SAAB couldn't exist today as an independent company, but that doesn't mean I can't remember the hey-day of SAAB fondly - after all, I lived through it and was part of it. I don't blame GM for SAAB's not being able to remain independent. But I think I can blame GM fairly for making SAAB "just another car" instead of something special. The 9-3SS is a good car, but remember that it is the product of an independent SAAB design and engineering operation (maybe the last product of that design team). Design and engineering is going to be combined with Opel in the future. If SAAB has to exist only as a rebadged Opel, then I'd rather it didn't exist, because an Opel with a SAAB badge on it just isn't a SAAB in my mind. Sorry, but rebadging Opels as SAABs isn't my idea of GM being SAAB's savior. I hope it will be different, but I think GM has other priorities on its mind right now.
