Outside of North America you can get things like VW Touran and Mitsubishi Spacestar. In North America you will have to buy an SUV or a minivan. Unless you get the old Peugeot 508 SW with 3 rows of forward-facing seats. But there goes your "decent" power/performance.
You did not say no full-size vans, so maybe get that. Dodge (Mercedes) Sprinter is available in short length/low roof option, with a modern turbodiesel.
Are you saying a Cadillac SRX is not a lumbering SUV? Speaking of SUVs, I think a Toyota Highlander is pretty much a Camry wagon, so that's another alternative. It comes with standard stability control, which is way nice.
