Ruling out true SUVs and minivans that look like minivans, you have two options: car-based SUVs and minivan-based SUVs. Here are my top picks within each (in no particular order):
Tall wagons: top picks:
Ford Freestyle
Toyota Highlander
Cadillac SRX
Volvo XC90
Other tall wagons:
Buick Rendezvous
Sport-Minvan-things: top picks:
Honda Pilot/Acura MDX
Chrysler Pacifica, if 6 (big and comfortable) seats is enough.
Other Sport-Minivan-things:
Chevrolet Uplander
And one real SUV that's small enough not to be hulking:
Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7
My thoughts: The Ford Freestyle is new for 2005, and it looks promising. It should be similar to the Highlander, which is a great car/SUV/thing. The SRX and XC-90 are a bit bigger...not quite hulking, but big. The Rendezvous is old technology, and wasn't even a good competitor when it was new.
The Honda and Acura win comparison tests all the time. They're a bit taller than the Freestyle and Highlander. The Pacifica only seats six, but it does that very well. I like the concept a lot. The Uplander is ugly...thinly disguised minivan. The Suzuki is actually a stretched small SUV. It won't be as good on the road as the others, but it theoretically could go offroad. It's also old technology, a cousin of the now-extinct Chevy/Geo Tracker.
Good luck and fun carshopping,
Matt
