actually, the subies I've rented (all 4s) have looked pretty simple under the hood (in modern terms)... but the engine arrangement must make some work harder - I've heard the engine needs lifting more often... 9-5 is pretty simple by modern terms... people are starting to diy the 9-3's also... I hope things change re needing dealer tools for everything though - will make it hard to sell Saabs to rural buyers!
for Blake, I think it sounds more like its a matter of confidence than anything else... and fair enough... it's not likely that the engine is going to fail, or alternator, or whatever... but if something does, it can be a pain in the neck, especially with kids... that said, a sludge check (~$300) and a BBA Reman job on the abs (<$200?) + keeping up with the basic maintenance are going to cost a lot less than buying/leasing... but still might not be enough for the confidence... probably means a newer/different sort of car makes sense... just beware the "paying a payment and paying for repairs" scenario... inlaws have a relatively moden civic bought new, and have had some whopping dealer repair bills even though it's under warranty (wear stuff, eg exhaust, isn't always included in the warranty, beyond the short term)...
