I've only owned this one V70, but I've had a few 9000s and have had a lot of friends with 9000s as well. I don't find the V70 anywhere near as responsive as the 9000 - it understeers like crazy, turn-in is more like a turn suggestion, and throttle response is muddy. It ultimately does whatever you ask it to, but it's nowhere as sharp as - especially - a 2nd gen 9000. The 9000 was a masterpiece of packaging, but the V70 strikes me as pretty average in that regard. I don't have a 9000 around to compare, but the V70 is a pretty decent sized car on the outside but much more, um, intimate on the inside. I also find the ergonomics extremely questionable - the sunroof switch tucked behind the wiper stalk and rear windows that don't go all the way down. The 9000's ACC is a little primative, but at least makes some sense - the Volvo requires both fan speed and air distribution switches to be on AUTO for ACC, and why the fan speed is an infinitely adjustable slider that only offers four actual speeds is a mystery.
I don't dislike the V70 - it's been great to have around, but IMHO the 9000 was a much more thoughtfully designed car, aimed at people who like driving a bit more than the Volvo was. They each have their purpose, for certain, but as I told my dad it seems the 9000 was built by Swedes who'd had a 5-seriea Touring described to them over the phone, and the V70 from Swedes who'd once driven a Buick. :D
