I'm not that impressed with the 5-speed AW, either. The 4-speed was such a solid transmission the 5-speed ended up being a real disappointment. I guess it's typical of those early 5-speeds, though. Nobody was making good ones.
I have no real idea what the "weak spot" in the 4L30 is. Fluid changes might very well extend their lives, but my buddy is convinced it's cheap parts. It was a built to be cheap, built to be disposable transmission, and IMHO there is no excuse for BMW using it instead of the 4L60, which would have handed the six cylinder much more gracefully. My $0.02, anyway! :)
