I am not an MPG exaggerator. I kept meticulous readings, always topped off and I know didn't average more than 7.5, even with not using the generator. Of course I'm in SoCal so there are not many flat areas.
ISTR the sentiment on 460 vs 454 was: 460 better hill climber, 454 better MPG. I can attest to the 460's hill climbing ability: 55-60 MPH all the way up the Cajon Pass on I-15, many times. Oh, also the I-70 from Grand Junction up the Continental Divide and through the tunnels (11,000+ feet elevation) to Denver was not a problem.
My unit had a 4-speed with overdrive on/off switch which I used often. Despite Ford's reputation for glass transmissions, I didn't have any problems.
I don't have any experience with the more modern Ford V10s but I do have a Suburban with an 8.1L (494 ci) engine. It has a lot of power and torque and consistently returns around 12 MPG. Mine was/is a piston slapper and used a lot of oil for the first 100K miles. It has since quieted down and doesn't use as much oil. My point: research this issue dispassionately.
