I think you are putting your own personal spin on this. While you may be correct about some folks... quite frankly, if we were to buy an EV, it would be more from the perspective that there are simply fewer mechanical parts to go wrong in a land where there is a salt slurry on the road 6 months of the year. I replace an exhaust every couple years. No exhaust on an ev. and it goes on... No oil changes. In some cases, no transmission. All this and electric motors develop full torque at very low rpm, even more than a turbo... This stuff is appealing to me. I don't really believe that charging the thing is all flowers and daisies, saving the world, etc (we have some coal fired plants on the grid), and sure there are batteries etc that may become a repair cost down the road (and even to produce are not "planet friendly")... but the simplicity of fewer moving parts really appeals to me (with an ee background)...
Sure there are some that think they are better than others because they are "saving the planet"... as time goes on, more and more people buy into them for economic or logistical reasons. It sure would be nice if there were more *real* cars with this tech though. i3, leaf, even prius, are not much use beyond basic grocery getters/commuters (which admittedly is probably the target market). Tesla is much more interesting imho.
