Well, BMW does have the i8 at the other end so, yeah, I think the i3 is their appliance. They definitely have to do something raise their corporate average economy and they specifically have to offer alternative fuel vehicles if they want to sell any cars at all in California. The i3 is, in theory, the vehicle that does those things for them. The Tesla is nearly twice the cost of the i3 and certainly not capable of the sales numbers BMW needs this thing to turn in. I think aiming at appliance broadens their consumer appeal (maybe wins some would-be Prius owners) and helps things from a legislative side. Frankly, if the i3 had been available when we got the 500e I would have given it a strong look. An even more practical Volt with some convention-busting attributes? My curiosity is piqued. No, it's not an M3 but neither was the 318i or the 528e. :)
