for future reference, the same filter as the volvo is used on type IV vws, like late bus (72-79) and vanagon (80-9?)
the other volvo filter is likely for diesels, which is a vw engine, which is the same thread but twice the length. great filter if you have the room. it might be a little fatter as well.
a slimmer but longer filter is for a gas golf/rabbit/jetta (75-present(?)) a tad longer, a bunch slimmer. a cooperative parts counter person might get them all out for you to compare.
if i may pipe in about the engine troubles, i would certainly change the oil pump and anything related, especially the relief valve spring. there might be an issue in the oil passage in the block. is the engine coming out or being rebuilt in the car?
