...You have already done the hard part. Mitsus are easy. Also, a loose exhaust gasket should smell but not much smoke (relatively). Oil leaks make smoke, gobs of smoke. In the past I made a new gasket out of 22 guage Aluminum, and it worked great for several years, until my car was totalled.
Mitsu rebuilds are easier than Garret as the units go together only one way, so you don't need to worry about clocking the cartridge properly. Just mark the impeller halves to line up properly and go from there. Don't forget to chip out all the carbo build-up from the exhaust side and cartridge with a wooden or soft metal dowel. I soak the exhaust side and cartridge bodies in 1/2 acid overnight. DO NOT SOAK ALUMINUM PARTS AT ALL EVER in acid.
