trying to understand analogue vs digital signal ...

As the subject title states, I am trying to understand the difference between an analogue signal and digital signal. Here is what I have questions about:
1) Already in 1993, it is my understanding that the first version of Trionic5 offered digital signals. For example, the T5 ecu sent digital signals to the injectors to open and close them. Although a multimeter could not register this voltage, one could see the digital signal by making a home made LED and see the light illuminate.
Is there any other way to measure a digital signal other then using an LED light? In other words, is there a device out there to help one determine what the modulating frequency would be?
2) It is also my understanding that the new electronic throttle bodies in the 9-5's use a digital signal as well. What I don't understand is how the ecm opens and closes the servo motor based on certain digital signals from the T7 ecu.
As always... TIA.
