From what you describe, it doesn't sound like you NEED a 3" exhaust. But, none of us actually NEED one, just some of us have to have one. The general consensus seems to be that the biggest performance gain from a 3" exhaust is in the downpipe. I think the 3" catback mostly just adds noise, which some people like, and some people don't. If you buy an entire JT system it's not bad value ($500-ish), though you will need to add a cat - $50-100. The life of a JT downpipe seems to be about 4 years in MA. Here's what I did, take it for what it's worth...
JT downpipe ($275), Jet-Hot coated ($110) for longevity, Catco cat ($50 new on auction), Simons sport 2 1/2" exhaust ($250) and stock flex pipe ($90) modified to tie everything together plus 2 1/2 hours labor to install. So, everything came to close to $1,000 installed. The Simons system is normally $350 from one of the site sponsors, I bought elesewhere and saved $100 because I could wait, which you really can't right now. It also doesn't come with the flex pipe part, which you need to add. My thought is the cheapest/fastest/most sensible solution for you would be to replace with a stock catback from eeuro for around $350 + an hour labor to install. There's no knowing how long your current cat/downpipe will last. But, if you can give it a visual and see if it looks ok, then it probably is ok. They seem to last around 170,000... Replacing the stock downpipe/cat with a stock downpipe & cat is expensive - a performance option is probably more cost effective. Taliaferro/GenuineSaab has some nice complete exhaust options - I think a full stainless system is about $1,000, and shouldn't be more than 2 hours to install, since it's a nice kit. If this was available when I did mine, this is probably what I would have done. It wasn't, and I got tired of waiting to get it from Engstrom (after 6 months of "it's on the ship... should be arriving any day").
