I'll never understand why anyone wants to make their car louder for the sake of being louder, but I'm in the minority there. Anyway...
1. Is a larger exhaust a useful upgrade on its own, even without plans for future tuning? In a word, no. Having said that, an upgrade to stainless is definitely useful and worthwhile, and those typically are larger diameter.
2. Given that it's an automatic, is the stock plumbing perfectly adequate for the lower power output? Yes.
3. Does the fact that my turbo is old and dying have any impact on this decision? Is it for sure dying, or are you just saying that because it's old?
4. Is there any reason not to go to the local custom exhaust shop for this, or should I be looking at particular brands or parts? Most exhaust shops are shoddy, in my opinion. They'll most likely try to weld something on without even removing the system from the car.
5. Is there any reason to consider replacing the entire exhaust or would it be fine to do just cat back? My budget is finite, but I want to do what makes the most sense for the car. Just cat-back for your purposes.
I would go with one of the site sponsors, and I've had good experience with Jak Stoll. Be sure to tell him you have no intentions of performance tuning, or he will probably talk you into a full 3" exhaust. ;-) A 2.5" stainless cat-back system will achieve all your goals, as the straight-through mufflers are definitely louder.
