I will agree with you on the cam swapping part, unless you do something like the Speedparts (I think?) guys, or Damien did a while back and made adjustable cam sprockets, the differenced between the various stock cams are minimal, and the differences should be minimal as well. Several of the people over on that other Saab forum have a few variations of custom ground cams, but the results seem to be hit or miss, and the methodology behind their selection is about as accurate. Nick T. has some numbers for a few different grinds though, you should look around the tech gallerys on the site to see what sort of comparisons there are, but those are mostly for the new gen cars and his Viggen and such if I remember correctly.
On the 2.1L head though, Stephen and Dave spent a fair bit of time employing the use of the flowbench at Lesco testing different porting schemes on the classic heads and found that short of converting the C900 blocks to take the T5 9000 or NG900 cyl heads, or the even newer T7 heads, the 2.1L / early 2.3L 9000 heads do actually flow better in stock form than some of the modified earlier heads.
I will be the first to say though that there are tons of things affecting what all that translates to in terms of output once the whole package is assembled, but that's the whole point of addressing multiple parts of the system - they have to be addressed as a package. Very rarely does one component have the ability to make a night and day change.
I like where this discussion is going though, thanks Gavin, it's been a while since there was some really thought provoking discussion going on.
Best,
Drew
