Even using synthetic oil, the factory recommended change intervals are ridiculously far apart on a lot of cars, Saabs weren't even the worst in that category. I don't know what they were thinking when they recommended the intervals at like 7500 miles. Changing the oil every 3k-5k miles, depending on driving habits, is neither unreasonable for a turbocharged car nor all that expensive if you DIY or take it somewhere cheap.
I change mine based on a usage schedule rather than a mileage schedule. Change it immediately before every track day, winds up being about once a month in summer and not at all during the winter months. I don't think I put 5k miles on the car in a whole year of driving, but this is a different use case entirely than the manual authors had in mind.
Anyone who has no idea how to take care of a car and no interest in learning should get something like a mid-90s Civic, boring but highly resistant to neglect. Note that even recent generations of Camry had sludge problems, so not all boring cars are safe either!
