I've given this some thought as well. I have a '94 Aero with a dead 5-speed that I needed to replace.
The AW unit in the NG900 seems like a good candidate. The NG900 used the same T5 engine management system as the later 9k's, so one would assume that it would have mostly the same outputs to the transmission computer as the 9k.
The wild card might be the ABS computer. I don't know if the ABS computer talks to the transmission computer in the NG900, but one thing to consider is that it's a completely different signaling setup vs. the 9k (the 9k has 29 teeth on the ABS sensor, and the 900/9-3/9-5 has 26 teeth). Perhaps the ABS computer converts this signal to a voltage output for the transmission, and it's no big deal, I don't know, but it'd be something to check into.
The other obvious sticky points would be making sure the axle shafts actually fit (were long enough to reach the hubs), or figure out how to make a hybrid axle by putting the 9000's tripod joints into the AW's inner drivers.
Finally, there's the transmission mount, which will line up differently than where the 9k expects it. Some fairly straightforward fab work should take care of that, though.
It seems like the AW is a bit more robust than the ZF units, so it might be worthwhile figuring this out - as factory solutions may get hard to come by in the future.
