The exhaust manifold to turbin flange is identical if you compare T25 and TD04 but, the TD04HL-15T-5cm2 has a round inlet, -6cm2 is oval. The exit of exhaust manifold is round. Either way, both will work, of course a exhaust manifold that is matched to the turbin inlet is always the best but you can´t always have the best. A way to have the best is to have your stock manifold ported to match the -6cm2. The abbott kit that you were referring to does come with a new manifold so that it matches the oval inlet so you do not have to port it yourself but some people do prefer to buy a used -6cm2 for around $400 and port it themselves instead of paying for $1700+ for the Abbott kit.
In terms of getting a used ballbearing turbo then look at the sr20det s14 t-28 model which sells on ebay for around $450 and again should be a direct bolt with faster spooling.
I also like your analogy between the turbo and the bike. I'll have to remember that in the future.
