"IF" the piston problem is related to knocking: I'll put $50 bet on the problem being related to worn spark plugs. Everything the ecu knows about cylinder pressure/knocking is based on ion sensing feedback function of the spark plug. Common sense tells me the feedback from a worn or dirty plug will affect what the ecu thinks is happening. IF the system is calibrated with a new plug.. the feedback signal can't be the same with a wide gap or worn plug. Just a guess.
