That's a possibility (and so is a bad ground connection in your instrument cluster) but just to preserve your sanity, I'd still check out the sensor first. If you pull the wire off the sensor and hold it clear of anything, the gauge should read at one end of the scale; if you ground the sensor against a good ground on the engine, it should read at the other end of the scale. If the needle behaves correctly when you do this, the problem is probably NOT the gauge itself.
Again, the resistances involved are so small that it doesn't take much to change the effect. Mine would resettle the needle somewhat when I thumped on the gauge face, even though the actual problem was with the sensor wire; whacking the gauge just made the needle take a set in a slightly different position.
