By that I mean: can the valves come into contact with the top of the pistons if the timing belt fails?
Well no, because there is no timing belt, the camshaft is gear-driven. The crankshaft gear (steel) drives the camshaft gear (fiber unless you have located a steel one which is noisier but will never break) and the balance shaft gear (ditto fiber or steel). If the fiber balance gear breaks the engine still runs; if the fiber camshaft gear breaks it would be equivalent to a timing belt breaking. I have had a broken balance gear but not a cam gear and think it unlikely as the cam gear has twice the teeth of the balance gear (turns at half the speed) so the balance gear seems like the one that would most often fatigue and fail first. This doesn't answer your real question which is "interference or not," which I don't know but suspect not. It is not usually a question for gear-driven camshafts so the information is not included in the timing belt guides which cover belt-driven camshafts only.
