I've never seen a cam gear failure in a V-4. I don't think there is an interference betweeen valves and pistons on these engines. Actually, the balance shaft bearings usually fail before the gears do. I know there is interference on the early Triumph built 99 engines.
Teh German Ford V-4 engine was origianlly supposed to go into the Cardinal, a small Ford to be produced in Detroit in 1962. The project was squashed because of the success of the Falcon. When Ford of Germany was looking for a new engine, they took over development of the Cardinal V-4. There was also a V-4 built in Britain, but the Kent engine is completely different from the Cologne engine (and not as reliable from some things I've heard).
As for Lars story about strokers sitting at the factory and the engines eventually being replaced by V-4's, I seriously doubt it. First of all, the engine compartment floor pan of the V-4 cars is different than that of the strokers, so it wasn't just a simple swap. Secondly, there was still a very strong market for the stroker engine in Europe at that time, and most of SAAB's production was sold there. Most American's didn't trust the stroker, but what did we know; most of us were buying Detroit Pigs. Most of the 1967 production was strokers and most of the 1968 production was V-4's, but they built both during those two years. I happen to own a very early V-4 engined 96 built in July or August of '66. It's the lowest chassis numbered V-4 I've found in the country except for one that was recently imported from Sweden.
