You never knew that a Saab had a freewheel device! There's a rod down near your pedals that turns freewheel on/off. Pull it as far as you can and you've disabled freewheel. Push it in and you have clutchless gearchange and extra mpg. I drive the 96 V4, but I assume all Sonnetts had this device fitted to their gearbox. As regards jumping out of first, if changing the gear oil does not work sounds like an overhaul unfortunately.
Turn the wheel to full lock then keep inching the steering wheel back to central. Do you hear a groaning noise? Sounds like your track rod ends/balljoints are a bit seized. Or the tyres are past it. Try jacking up the whole front of the car so both front wheels are off the ground and repeat.
