Sometimes I get sick of saying this as it makes me sound really self-important but I'll say it again. I'VE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM!!!
Re sticking >> what seems to happen is that as you open the throttle the linkage effectively "pulls" the spindle forwards about 1mm i.e. towards the heater unit. So, when you release the throttle, the flap tries to bed itself shut again but gets caught on the carb housing. If you tap the spindle toward the front of the car everything sorts itself out (until you press the throttle again!!). Basically bend the linkage so that as you open the throttle it pulls at exactly 90 degrees to the linkage and you dont get any horizontal play in the spindle. The spring on the spindle simply isn't strong enough to return the plate to its rightful resting place. Also what you could do - but it looks a bit naff - is to attach a spring ( similar to the one that is attached to the battery tray ) between the left rocker cover and the linkage which pulls the linkage back to rest when you release the accelerator pedal.
Re feathering the throttle >> I'll bet that the small u-shaped tube on the PCV valve is split beyond repair, or there's a leak on the brake servo. If you manage to obtain of these damn PCV tubes please let me know the source!!!
Hope this helps.
