>>what seems to happen is that as you open the throttle the linkage >>effectively "pulls" the spindle forwards about 1mm i.e. towards the >>heater unit
That's what it's doing. The throttle shaft does move in and out a bit. Although, the flap is closing properly in the carb housing. I spoke to weber technician at "pierce manifolds" yesterday, he suggested pulling the shaft out (which I did) and cramming bearing grease inside the shaft housing, then reassembling everything. I took the shaft out, and it doesn't look too bad, but there are some shiny areas that indicate some wear...I've ordered another shaft, in case it's the culprit.
I know exactly what you mean by the horizontal free play in the shaft. Seems like a munfacturing problem to me!!?. I'm guessing that with the right size (and maybe filed) washer, I can elliminate this free-play, while still having a smooth operating throttle shaft...Whatdya think?

>>Also what you could do - but it looks a bit naff - is to attach a spring...
There is *supposed* to be a spring that pulls the throttle shaft back down. (SAAB part number 73 48 428). It hooks to the back side of the throttle shaft and connects to a metal bracket mounted on the tranny. Perhaps my problem was that I used a replacement spring that was *too* strong, and caused excessive stress on the throttle shaft.

>>or there's a leak on the brake servo. If you manage to obtain of these damn PCV tubes
Brake servo???Where did you get that? I want one!! Power brakes on a Sonett, never heard of that!!? As far as the PCV tube, yep mine is TOAST!!!
I ordered one from the dealership a week ago (the parts guy *says* he can get them), but I have yet to see anything, we'll see...(If you want to try, the SAAB part number is: 88 12 331)
