Before anything, apologies. I keep referring to my 96 when I mention servo's and springs etc!!! Does the Sonnett have this double-L-shaped piece of rod which connects between the long throttle rod from the heater and the linkage piece on the carb? If it is then the following applies:-
It's exactly what I had to do, place some washers here there n everywhere to eliminate movement. Again, this was on a 96, but I spoke to my chums at Highgate UK and they gave me a part number for a different Weber throttle linkage piece which improved matters immensely. Basically, the linkage on the end of the carb spindle has a ball at one end and a hole at the other which the 96 throttle rod threads through. The linkage piece I got with the carb had to be turned around 180 degrees so that the "hole" part of the linkage piece was above the spindle, which in turn allowed the Saab metal rod linkage to be placed through this hole. The problem was, it was still not functioning properly and pressing the accelerator pedal fully down only opened the carb about 70 per cent. I tried all sorts, bending the rod here and there, reducing the height between inlet manifold and throttle rod linkage, buying some elbow joints from a model shop and using the ball instead of the hole on the linkage piece, even trying to convert the linkage to a full accelerator cable. Ended up with the throttle stuck open at 70mph, scary.
Best thing is I get the part number and I'll mail you when I get it.
Oh, I've even tried boiling bits of tubing overnight to replicate a PCV tube shape. Doesn't work!! But apparrently this tube is pretty fundamental to proper "breathing" of the engine and correct mixture, so if anybody is carrying stock of these I'll buy 10. I've had endless problems due to this including your symptoms. If you get a problem where the car idles at 950 for a few seconds then drops to 800, and you manage to fix this, please let me know. It's been dogging me for six months now, even to the extent that I'm thinking of replacing jets or even worse, reverting back to FoMoCo!!
