Listen to the last comment. Chances are, if the light is intermittant, then you have a problem with the switch. It is under the carpet, behind the sheet metal through which the pedals sprout. You can see the switch without removing the metal, and probably the wires that attatch to it as well. Get in there and see what you find. The pedal adjustment is made (at least the only manual one) via the rear brake adjustment bolt. If your hand brake has to really be yanked to engage, then rear adjustment may be in order (this does not mean, mind you, that the rear brakes are bad, just out of adjustment....but, the light should always be on if you have too much pedal travel...if the switch is working.
