What I did is straight out of Jack Ashcraft info: Front sway bar from a 96, the bushings and end anchors all bolt on directly, the holes were drilled at the factory. You will need to cut out the small ovals the bar passes through on each side. If you look closely you will see some oval depressions in the body work on each side where the sheet metal was overlapped. Check out the holes on a 96 and examine the same area on the Sonettt. You'll see them...Easiest w. the drive train out. Next, take the springs from the same 96, have them shortened 2 inches, and put them in. Add better shocks. Put 195/60 tires on. With the 96 springs they won't rub.
I don't remember if any of these mods put the car into "prepared" catagory; I don't think so, but check.
If you want to get really wild, you can take another page from Jack A. Get a spare good motor, gather about $2000, have a GOOD racing type machine shop do the following:
1 bore the piston holes out to accept ford 289 pistons,
2 have the new pistons put on the existing rods (they fit w the same wrist pin)
3 plane the heads .040 in,bore out the exhaust ports to 2.125 in., bigger valves, hardened seat, tighter springs, port & polish.
4 have everything magnifluxed & balanced
5 lighten the flywheel
4 find or fabricate a 2 barrel intake manifold, (they were available from SAAB for a while) plane the intake manifold .040 in. to mate w the lowered heads, machine the manifold to mate w a 2 barrel Weber, or Holly carb.
5 put it all together,
6 get a good gearbox from a 96, significantly lower gear ratio, higher engine rpms, but accelerates like a bat outa *&^%
7 get the twin muffler exhaust system from Motor Sport Service in Jamestown,NY
8 put it all together & have fun....
PS I actually did all this: whooo-weee!!
PPS find and install the METAL balance shaft gear, throw the fiber original in the trash
