Transporting a project car?

I'm looking at a Sonett right now in southern California, one that's far from running and in questionable condition.
And while for once I can actually afford it, I have no way of actually bringing the thing home should I buy it.
I've talked to a few auto shipping companies, and I've been quoted between $780 and $1100 so far. That's a little more then I'd like to pay, as I'm sure you will understand.
So I'd need to haul it from just south of LA to Everett, Washington via a trailer, or a flat bed truck.
Right... where did I put that truck...
Can anyone out there who'd like to help another Sonett into the hands of a fanatic offer methods of getting it up the west coast?
Suggestions? Horror stories? Truck owners willing to lend a hand even?
This would be my first Sonett, and I've looked forward to it for many years. The fact that the auction ends on what will otherwise be a very unimpressive birthday is an added bonus.
