I hate to be a stickler, but they really are ranked very low in reliability. Far below average.

They made the 2004 Consumer Reports "Least Reliable" list. Whether you like Consumer Reports or not, they have consistently been proven competent at evaluating the tangible problems with cars.

They aren't good at evaluating the fun to drive factor, which they leave to magazines like Car and Driver or Road and Track.

But as far as a car "for the long haul," I think you have to look at places like Consumer Reports, and they haven't had good things to say about the current 9-3's reliability. In addition, Saab parts/labor are fairly expensive, and Saab dealerships are often scarce. It is a real pain to have to drive 60 miles every time you have a problem and want warranty work done.

Take a look at http://money.cnn.com/2004/11/08/pf/autos/cr_auto_reliability/ . As the article points out, there is more to owning a car than reliability, but it shouldn't be glossed over to quickly.

It isn't just Saab, all european makes are suffering lately.
