You see the whole thing with this balance shaft use is that engine engineers are in agreement that when you push a 4 cyl engine over 2.0L in volume you also get internal vibrations.
This doesn't have to be from unbalanced parts of the engine but some (for me) undefined laws of physics.
Cars are also getting more and more sofisticated and quiter and people demand vibration free cars.
Volvo has been using 2.3L engines since 84 without balance shafts and I have never had a problem or feeling that they had excessive vibrations. Volvo actually installed external balance shafts on some 2.3L engines in 89 (to follow with the hype) and that was a disaster in itself.
Toyota also used a 2.3 L without any problems.
So if you are building a performance engine with max horsees in mind for your Viggen I would probably leave out the balance gear. But if you are just putting together a stock engine and planning to sell the car I would keep it stock.
You should check on the performance board since it is a lot of people that knows WAY more about performance then me.
