I know that on the Porsche 968 which has balance shafts from the factory, those that are modified for competition leave off the balance shafts. Frankly I was surprised Saab used the balance shafts on the two liter. It actually idles less smooth than my Ford Focus 2 liter and has a rough spot around 1900 rpm when accelerating in "D" on the highway. At least Saab had the good sense to chain drive theirs - Porsche's are famous for chuncking the belt drive on the 944's and 968's. (And yes, I'm speaking from personal experience!)
