Saab is excellent in this regard.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Tue, 5 Sep 2006 14:24:34 In Reply to: 2003 9-3ss arc consuming oil, Chad Earl, Tue, 5 Sep 2006 04:58:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
First Saab engines generally don't use oil, unlike some brands, VW comes to mind.
Second, Saab is good about the warranty on the very few cars that do use oil. Many manufactures consider 1qt per 1,000-1,500 miles normal and won't warranty such an engine.
Thirdly, how long had it been since the oil was checked? A quart every 3-5k miles is very acceptable for any manufacturer and in my expererience few Saabs even do that, most are darn good on oil consumption.
That's one of the reasons Saab has revised it's service intervals on the 9-3SS from approx. 15k and 2 years to approx 10k and 1 year. By approx. I'm referring to the oil life monitor which will get you in approximately at the 10k miles mark for "normal" driving. 15k was just too long to got between inspections. The oil was still fine after 15k, but the rest of the car and the oil level need to be checked more often than that to avoid problems.
