If the car is losing a quart every 5k then where exactly is this quart of oil going? (it has to go somewhere).
Options I can think of include 1) leaking/seeping to the outside of the engine (not necessarily a big deal but one should be able to see it), 2) leaking/seeping past gaskets and seals inside the engine (sign of impending gasket or seal failure, potential problems where it ends up, or 3) its being burned by various routes into the combustion chamber which can create thick hard carbon deposits that can reduce the size of the combustion chamber, gum up the valves, lead to pre-ignition etc. I'm not aware of any scenario where burning/losing oil in an engine would be characterized as "great". Even my 20 year old HARLEY engine does not burn/leak a quart every 5k.
Maybe a mechanic who is familiar with this engine could explain what part of the design allows a quart to be lost every 5k and where that quart goes and why its not a problem to have oil somewhere outside the normal circuit (i.e., in the combustion chambers, in the cooling loop, in the transmission case, etc).
