It's not in the range where it would be warranty repaired by any company out there. Some companies consider this to be "normal" oil consumption, but of course Saab owners expect (and usually receive) better. There have been a *few* 9-3s with extremely high consumption, but those are usually caused by a casting flaw or something, are immediately obvious, and repaired by Saab.
At the level you are experiencing, there's any number of potential causes. Could be seeping through turbocharger seals, a bad valve stem seal, or possibly even leaking although at a quart per 5000 you would probably see evidence of a leak. Could be something in the PCV system. It's probably not rings. It's probably not something that's easy to find either. I'd just get in the habit of adding some oil every thousand miles or so. One thing I noticed - it's not good economy to add a quart just before it gets changed ;-).
