I recommend you drive a 6 speed and see for yourself whether you like it or not. Be sure to test drive one cold.
I have the '07 6 speed which I think is a similar transmission w/ a few "enhancements". In my most generous assessment, this transmission requires very precise shifting technique to get smooth 1--2 and 2--3 shifts (shifting to higher gears is very clean and smooth). Also, when its freezing cold, I need to put the car in reverse before I shift into 1st...otherwise it just won't go into 1st (not a big deal for me since my '87 900T had to be put into 2nd gear just before engaging reverse to avoid crunching since aparently there were no reverse synchros). Clean 1--2 shifts can be achieved MOST of the time only when the trans is warm, a 1 second or longer pause between shifts is used (presumably to wait for the synchros to do their job), and 1st gear is run up to 3500 rpm before shifting (not the way most people drive).
After working on it for 4 months, I'm convinced there is a "sweet spot" to be found where clean shifting in the low gears is the norm (and I'm getting close) but the level of analysis and effort required on the part of the driver to reach that level of precision might exceed the average driver's tolerance/patience. There could also be production variation on these units that make some better/worse than others. Thus, its important to drive the car you're going to buy and scrutinize carefully. I think the 5 speed is more forgiving and has been around for longer time.
