Well, engines are built to much tighter tolerances these days. Low viscosity oil stays in the crankcase fairly well. My 05 doesn't consume a drop.

There are a couple places it could go - if it did. Valve guides and perhaps some blowby (getting around the rings). In the former case, the oil leaks right into the combustion chamber and is consumed, in the later the oil is picked up by exhaust that leaks past the rings and recirculated by the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system (right back into the combustion chamber). With a turbo, you can also lose oil if the turbo seals are worn. The hot exhaust will vaporize it and shoot right out the exhasut pipe.
