Jim,
A casual analysis of this on my 25 mile commute of mostly highway w/ some up/down slopes shows (when I hit the clear button and let the average stabilize a bit but remain sensitive to real time fluctuations) the mileage is about the same whether I'm crusing at 2.2k rpm in 6th or 3k in 5th. Perhaps there would be a greater difference on a long haul trip. If I'm crusing on flat at a constant mph in either gear I get essentially the same result (overall mileage is better but difference bet 5th and 6th not noticed). The difference under boost vs not appears significant since the flat road mileage goes south quickly once the hills kick in.
Mostly, I view it as not really a gas mileage feature. To me, it merely enables one to cruise at 80 mph at a relaxed engine speed.
The gear ratios for my 6sp 2.0T are actually quite close to my former '87 900T 5speed but 6th serves as an overdrive on top of what the 900T had. Because you really need to be going over 70 mph to drive in 6th, I use it sparingly on my commute but I'm glad its there when I need it. My '87 900T actually got better mileage than the '07 2.0T however it had 165hp vs 210hp in the 2.0T so that's where the gas is going.
