Salesman was wrong..... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 29 Aug 2007 05:32:18 In Reply to: Gas...prem vs. reg, tk505, Tue, 28 Aug 2007 20:06:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If he had worded it just the opposite, ..."use only premium as regular will do more harm than good"... he still would have been wrong, but the engines do prefer higher octane.
I have two Saabs, a 2000 9-5 and a 2006 9-3SC, and buy mid-grade (i.e. 89 octane) for both vehicles for most of the year. My 9-5 prefers premium in the summer months, specifically when the temp is 86 degrees F or higher, as the performance difference is noticeable. I also buy premium when traveling through the noumtains regardless of outside temperature - there is nothing as great as a turbo motor when taking mountain twisties at 80 MPH plus!
The engine computers will adapt to the octane level of the fuel you buy, but I recommend 89 octane or higher. In fact, I believe the owner's manual specifies 90 octane or higher.
